GoHighLevel alternative in Australia: DIY or done-for-you?

A GoHighLevel alternative only makes sense if the platform is not the right fit for you, and for many businesses it is. GoHighLevel, which now calls itself HighLevel on its own site, can run the whole chain from lead form to AI call to booking to CRM. The real question is who builds it, who keeps it compliant and who looks after it every week.
We sell the other option, so we say where we are biased. This guide covers what HighLevel includes, what it costs on its own published prices, what you still have to do yourself, and when a done-for-you service is the better choice. We have not tested HighLevel hands-on for this article. Every HighLevel figure comes from its own pricing page and help centre.
What HighLevel gives you
HighLevel is an all-in-one platform. Its pricing page lists Conversation AI, Voice AI, a website and funnel builder, email and SMS marketing, inbound and outbound calling, booking calendars, forms, surveys and quizzes, payments and API access. Plans are month-to-month and there is a 14-day free trial. The page also says usage-based charges apply.
That feature list covers every step of the chain most businesses want: a Facebook or website lead arrives, an AI qualifies it, a booking goes into a calendar, and everything lands in a CRM. The parts exist. Assembling them is the job.
What HighLevel costs
HighLevel's pricing guide says all prices are in US dollars. Its entry plan is $97 a month, and its help centre names a $497 a month plan as the one agencies need to rebill AI usage to clients. The AI features are priced separately, under what it calls AI Employee:
| Option | Price (USD) | Voice AI | Conversation AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay-per-use | No monthly fee | Voice engine, speech and model costs per use | At token cost |
| AI Employee Growth | $50 a month | 100 AI agent minutes a month | 1,000 agent responses a month |
| AI Employee Unlimited | $97 a month | Unlimited, subject to fair use | Unlimited |
Three details change the real bill. AI Employee is billed per enabled location. Phone system charges still apply to calls, even when Voice AI is covered by the Unlimited subscription. The pricing page also says usage-based costs cover phone numbers, SMS, emails and premium AI, so the monthly plan price is the floor, not the total.
The arithmetic for a single business on the $97 plan with AI Employee Unlimited is $194 a month in US dollars before phone, SMS and email usage. Figures can change, so check HighLevel before you decide.
What you still do yourself
The platform includes the tools. These jobs stay with you or an agency you hire:
- Building the workflows: the trigger from your form, the qualification logic, the booking rules and the CRM stages.
- Writing and testing the AI prompts, including what the agent says first and how it handles a stop request.
- Consent and records: a consent tick on the form, stored with each lead. See our guide to consent to call from a lead form.
- Australian calling rules: hours, caller identification, checking numbers against the Do Not Call Register, and ending a call on request. The pages we read do not describe checking the register or enforcing Australian calling hours, so ask HighLevel or your builder how you will do both. Our compliance guide lists the rules, and ACMA publishes the hours on its telemarketing page.
- Texts: consent, identification, unsubscribe and sender ID. See the Spam Act guide.
- Telling callers it is an AI, covered in our guide to AI caller disclosure.
- Monitoring and tuning every week, because prompts and lead quality drift.
When HighLevel is the better choice
- You have technical skill in-house, or an agency you trust, and you enjoy building.
- You run several businesses or clients and want one platform for all of them.
- You want the website, funnel, email and reputation tools in the same place.
- Your budget is time, not cash, and you can wait for a working version.
If that sounds like you, use the 14-day trial and build it. Nothing here should talk you out of it.
When done-for-you fits
- You want it working in days. Our engines go live within 48 hours.
- You would rather pay a published monthly fee than spend your own time on workflows and prompts.
- Your problem is leads going cold, not a shortage of software.
- You want someone else to handle setup, integrations, monitoring and optimisation.

GoHighLevel alternative: common questions
Is GoHighLevel good for Australian businesses?
It can do the job, and many Australian businesses and agencies use it. We have not tested it for this article. The things to check are the ones above: Australian calling hours, Do Not Call Register checks, consent records and AI disclosure.
Is it cheaper to build it myself?
On cash, usually, because the platform fee is low. On total cost it depends on how many hours the build, the compliance setup and the weekly tuning take you, and what those hours are worth.
Can I try HighLevel before I decide?
Yes. HighLevel offers a 14-day free trial. Our live demo calls your phone with your consent, so you can compare the experience.
Do I have to choose?
No. Some businesses start by building and bring in help for the parts that take time. Tell us where you are and we will say whether you need us.
